GameSpot TSO Feature
Written at 01:28 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
As mentioned before, GameSpot has added their "Behind the Games" feature of The Sims Online. It's a long but interesting read. One thing that's talked about, is the original idea for TSO:
"'Originally, our idea was that you'd set up your house and it would act as a server,' recalls Wright. In essence, you would build your house offline and then open it up for online players to come and visit. 'It was going to be a lot like the matchmaking service on [Blizzard's] Battle.net,' says Wright. In other words, to visit someone else's house you'd actually connect directly to that player's computer. The idea seemed like a good compromise: It would be quick to develop, but it would also give the game online functionality."
The whole article is basically a big interview with Will Wright, designer of SimCity, The Sims and The Sims Online (amongst others). With its 13 pages, it's probably the longest feature about The Sims Online ever written so far. It even tells some things that Will is afraid of in TSO - "people spending too much time playing the game and about the illegal activity that could happen in his world". The development of TSO from the beginning until the play test and the launch of Alphaville is described. That play test was scary to quite a big part of the team, as it would show the consumer's opinion. People not pleased with the play test would base their opinion on that even though the game is still in decelopment. The result could be fewer consumers for the final version. Anyway, you should just read the whoe thing as it's too big to summarise here. A must-read for everybody: "The Endless Hours of The Sims Online". Enjoy the reading!

Server Trouble Update
Written at 23:48 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
There's some news about the server trouble we're having with our .com server again. As you might have noticed, images are loading again which means the server is back up. However, due to the severe speed problems downloading files will remain disabled until at least tomorrow afternoon/evening. It could even be thursday afternoon before downloading will be re-enabled. The whole problem is that the server was put on a T1 connection (which is 1.544 mbit/sec or about 200kbyte/sec in total, for all connections). In other words, all users of this website and other websites on the same server had to share 200kb/sec, which often resulted in downloading speeds of about 0.2kb/sec per user. In that way, even downloading a small file of 100kb would take 5 minutes to download (where it should be under a minute even on a 56k modem connection!). Due to these unacceptable speeds, downloading will not be enabled again for now as we rather want to keep downloading on hold and make the site load slightly faster than make the whole site slow.

Our thesimszone.com server will be moved again probably tomorrow or thursday afternoon, but then to a 100MBit connection (12.5 MByte/sec in total, about 66 times as much as the current 'speed'). This should solve all the recent problems with speeds and downtime, and everything will be working again properly at normal speeds. Once the server has been moved, downloading will be enabled again, and our (still secret) new (and necessary) feature will be set up as well. We apologise for all this trouble, but hope you also understand that it is out of our control. Just remember we'll be back in two days time!

Poll #50 is up!
Written at 01:32 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Yes it's here. We've reached our 50th poll at this site. We've done them weekly, with exceptions when we had just launched and weren't so popular yet, and one other time in May during the server move. Poll 50 is about The Sims Online: if you're going to get it, how will you pay to get play time? Will you pay with your credit card ($10 monthly), or by using the game time cards ($30 for 90 days, available in stores)? Vote on the right, or on this page. As for poll 49: it's obvious most people run The Sims in a 1024x768 resolution: 69 of 112 people (61.60%!) said they use that screen resolution, of which 29 (25.89% of the total) wished it could be even higher. 'Just' 33 people (29.46%) use the 800x600 resolution, and 4 people (3.57%) didn't know what it was about. In total, 6 people (5.36%) said they don't play the game anymore. For a nice overview of the results, and the results of all 49 previous polls, visit the archive.

SimDay: TSO Chat tomorrow
Written at 22:03 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Tomorrow a chat with the TSO team will be hosted at the the official site. It will be held at 6pm PST, which is is 2am in Great Britain or 3am in the morning in Europe. It says the "TSO team" but it's probably just a part of it, as the whole team is bigger than 100 people. A transcript will be available sooner or later for those who miss it, for instance because it's too early in the morning. Besides that, there are a few new skins available from SSX Snowboarding. To download them, click this link. Make sure you are logged in at the official site. The file is 220kb big. That's all again for this week, another SimDay next week.

SimDay Update: another chat
Written at 00:30 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The SimDay news got updated a bit late again, with the news that there will be a SimCity 4 chat again next thursday (12 December) at 3pm PST (11pm GMT, midnight in Europe). The chat will be one where you can ask your questions to MaxisJoseph, designer of the SimCity 4 team. Go to chat here at that time to submit your questions. The same goes for the TSO chat later tonight (it's just a few hours away!). Have fun chatting!

The Sims Online Shipping Confirmed [Update]
Written at 17:31 by Steve - 3 comments.
The date for The Sims Online being shipped has been confirmed as the 17th December (providing there are no manufacturing problems). This will mean you will be able to purchase The Sims Online very soon!

If you want you can still become a play tester for The Sims Online by visiting The Sims Online Site. Or you can go direct to the order site at: https://secure.dotcomdist.com/maxemail.htm. Shipping is free if you live in the US or Canada, if you live outside the US or Canada shipping is $10. Please note that in certain countries you will not be able to sign up for the play test.

Update 8 December, 0:00 by ChEeTaH: This means The Sims Online has gone gold, i.e. production (pressing cds and manuals, boxing the packages etc) has started. As TheSimsResource says: "The Sims Online has been approved for production": the 'master cd' is ready and went to the companies for pressing. Note that this is only for the American edition (USA, Canada). Exact European release dates are unknown but it probably will be the first quarter of 2003.

Server Trouble Update Again
Written at 18:57 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Our .com server is back again for now, and so downloading has been re-enabled. Unfortunately there are still some problems with uploading files, so the new feature will have to wait a day or so. This problem was caused by the transferring of files, which made the directories on the server inaccessible for us (for writing). This will be fixed asap, which may result in another bit of downtime of a few hours. We are tired of the problems too, and hope everything's working properly again tomorrow or monday.

TSO Interview: Send us your questions!
Written at 12:21 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Some good news after all the server trouble: we have been invited to have an interview about The Sims Online with the TSO development/producers team. This means an interview with them will be seen here sooner or later. However, we know you probably have some questions you want to ask about The Sims Online. Now here's that opportunity! You can submit your questions to us by either e-mailing me or otherwise by making comments to this news post (registered TSZ members only!). We will select the best questions and add some of our own. These will then be in the interview. There is no guarantee that your question will be answered, but it's worth a try. Everybody is allowed to submit one or more questions, so send them in! You can submit questions until next week midnight between Sunday and Monday (so until Monday 16 December, midnight). We're waiting for your questions...

Server is back! New feature up!
Written at 23:55 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The moment you've all been waiting for (well, we were anyway) is here! The server is back up which means we can properly add files for your enjoyment again. But, we've also added something new, which is necessary for us. As I've explained more often, hosting a site costs money. At the moment, the costs are quite high for us and unfortunately we cannot afford it anymore at the moment. That's why we need your help! You can send us an amount of money (you decide how much) using the Donate button on the left (or by following this link). With the donations, we hope to cover all our costs. But, that's not where we stop! When we're able to pay all our bills, we will send the remainder of what we got to a charity. For the next few months we've selected the RGA. For more details about that, go to the donations page.

As we don't want you to leave empty-handed, we give you some value for your money too. Every month, a new bunch of special files will be added to this site. When you donate, you will get an email with a username and password, which you need to download these files. The files are listed in the donations file group, so you can get a preview of the files before you donate. You can also wait a month to get the files for free then, but then you also don't help us... which might mean we have to close down eventually! So:

New Poll
Written at 19:14 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Last night a new poll was added again. We are wondering what you have done to your Newbies and Goths, you know, the two families in the original game that everybody knows. Let us know how your Newbies and Goths ended up by voting on the right or at this page. In our last poll ("How will you pay for The Sims Online?") over 50% voted they will not be buying the game: 30 of 57 people chose that. 3 other options ("Game time cards", "Don't know yet" and "I will check TSO out first with the play time that comes with the game, then decide about it") all got 8 votes each (14.04%). The people who will pay with their credit card are in the minority: just 3 people picked that, which is just 5.26%.

SimDay: More chats...
Written at 19:40 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week in SimDay: a new TSO and SimCity 4 chat, a patch for The Sims Deluxe and a new The Sims PS2 website. The patch and website info can be read in the "Read more" link, but first here is all the chat info. First of all, tonight at 11pm (British time, midnight GMT or 3pm Pacific) there will be a chat of SimCity 4. Guest of honour is Joseph, designer of that game, who will be talking about the rewards system. Tomorrow there's another TSO chat where you can talk about the development team. That event will be held at 2am British time (which is 3 in the morning in Europe, 6pm PST). A chat of last week's chat is available at the TSO site. As it's available only in the community events section of the bug boards, I cannot read the chat as I cannot join the play test either. Remember that we have a TSO interview too! You can still submit your questions to us so your questions get answered.

Pop-ups
Written at 23:39 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
As you might have noticed, The Sims Zone is running out of money. We didn't put up the donations section for nothing last weekend... we need about £300 ($450) before the end of April next year. We hope you can help us out with that, as we don't want to become a pay site either. To get a bit of extra money from advertising (which isn't a lot at the moment), we've added pop-ups to our site. They will only pop up if you're not logged in as member. If you're not a member, then there's a chance that you will get to see a pop up. This depends on ValueClick at that moment, they have to have ads available at the time. If you feel like helping us out, please donate! You will get a few extra (special) files from us as reward. Besides that, if we get more money than we need, you will also support the RGA. Read all about it in the donations section. Thank you.

European fans can test TSO longer
Written at 21:39 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
There's some good news for European play testers of The Sims Online. As the release of the game in the US is coming closer and closer, the test is also getting closer to its ending. Testers can enjoy the game until another 2 weeks after the release, so until the beginning of next year. However, Europeans still have to wait a while for The Sims Online to be released. Fortunately though, those Europeans will be get in the so-called "International Founders Group". They can play until a while after the European release for free. If you register the full version of The Sims Online before the end of the play test (and after the release) then you will not lose your game progress. The exact release date in Europe is yet undetermined, but it will be next year.

More donation files added
Written at 22:58 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
They've been slightly delayed, but a two more files have been added for donors only. They're made by Bettjoe, and you can download them if you donate some money to us to help us (and the RGA) out. Please donate, we really need the money. We have received a few donations so far, and we hope many more will follow that example. Any spare bit of money, from $1 to $100 or even more, is useful to us. Of course, the more you donate the happier we are. Oh, and don't worry that you have to pay in US Dollars: we accept British Pounds, Euros and Canadian dollars to. So please donate now!

TSO December Update
Written at 18:43 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Now it's getting so close to the release of The Sims Online, the official site has gone through a bit of a remake. You could call it a relaunch. Unfortunately, quite a few things (like the news, message boards and more) have moved to the player website only, guests can't access much. However, one of the new things everybody can enjoy is the Sim Persona Test. Test what kind of Sim Personality you have there! All you have to do is answer 16 questions. Some old game features articles have been put in the spotlight again too. However, there are also new articles from this month. All the old and new articles can be found at this page. One new article is about advertising in the game, others about categorising, "Backstage Online!?" and an article about the media attention. The fifth 'article' is the persona test I mentioned earlier. Those who are in the beta test or who will be having the game next week (you must be registered anyway), can visit the player website here. All other people should have a look at this page.

The Neighborhood Handler 4.00 Final out!
Written at 22:34 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
It's here, the final version of The Neighborhood Handler 4.00! After months of work, it's finally ready. The manual got a new design and has been rewritten nearly completely. A few tutorials have been added too. But most important: the program is working ok! There were still quite a lot of bugs in the latest Release Candidate 2 version, a few of them causing not all files to be copied properly. Those old versions have been taken offline. To prevent such problems and other bugs, ALL users of The Neighborhood Handler 4.0 RC1 or 4.0 RC2 MUST upgrade to the 4.00 final version! I will not be giving any support anymore for these versions. Because this update is so critical, everybody can download it right away, so the big public doesn't have to wait a week after the group members got it.

You can download the full version from this page, or get the upgrade version here. For the upgrade version, you need to have version 3.7 or later installed. Enjoy this new version.

TSO on 60 Minutes II
Written at 23:07 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
"Don't miss 60 Minutes II, Wednesday, December 18, at 8:00PM ET/PT, when reporter Bob Simon takes an in-depth look at the video games industry with a spotlight on The Sims Online. The story features interviews with designers Chris Trottier and Will Wright."
Now I'm not American but I guess '60 Minutes II' is a tv show..? Anyway, this bit comes from the official TSO site, says it all doesn't it? It's probably worth checking out I guess.

Another TSO Chat
Written at 23:17 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
AC2 Warcy, a site about MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs), is going to have a chat with the TSO team. TSO will be released in the US tomorrow, and Friday, at 9pm EST this chat event will be held. That's 2am British time, 3am in Europe and 6pm PST. If you have questions, you can ask them there. More information is available at this page. At this moment, we've also submitted the questions for our TSO interview and you can expect that to appear here soon. We want to thank everybody who submitted questions to us for that.

The Sims Online ships
Written at 23:35 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
The Sims Online was shipped today, which means it will be in the stores tomorrow! Unfortunately this only goes for people in the USA. Play testers in the USA and Canada can play it for free for another 2 weeks. After that they'll have to buy the game and pay for it to keep playing the game. There's a press release at the official site. Interesting in it is a bit about the costs: it costs $49.99 to buy and $9.95 monthly to play the game. Not too interesting on itself, but then there's this page. It says that Europeans will basically pay a lot more: 54.99 to buy the game, and 12.99 monthly. For all play testers, this page might be interesting. It's about the Founders program, including a small bit for people not in the US, saying they'll be able to play the play test until after the release in their area. The press release can be found here. More information about The Sims Online is at the official TSO site.

More about TSO in 60 Minutes II
Written at 23:31 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Thanks to Sumit, there's some more information about the 60 Minutes show tonight. At this page you can find 3 web-exclusive RealPlayer Clips. One clip is about Will Wright and Chris Trottier talking about the differences between computer games and other media like novels and such. The other two are about the powerful appeal of The Sims, and that Will Wright admits he's God in a certain sense. It are quite short clips, but that doesn't make them any less interesting. This page has more information, and perhaps more videos will be put online after the show, which is shown at 8pm EST/PST on CBS News. Oh yeah, there's another clip about Bill Gates in the gaming business... but who really cares about that? You need RealPlayer to view the clips.

The Sims: SuperStar?
Written at 00:46 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Another expansion for The Sims could be coming our way... *sigh* It's called The Sims: Superstar, and there are some first rumours about that now - nothing is confirmed yet! At this page you can pre-order it. The retail price is $49,95 New Zealand Dollars, which is approximately 25 US dollars. Because the developer and publisher are "EA Games" on that site, it also seems to be an official pack. Note that this all is totally unconfirmed and it are only some first rumours. It could all be false. This would be the 6th (!) expansion pack for The Sims, not counting the Deluxe Edition. Of course, it could also be an expansion pack for The Sims Online. It's a matter of waiting for more news about it... if it's true anyway.

SimDay: Wrong dates...
Written at 19:17 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Maxis has messed up their calendar: today apprantly is Tuesday the 19th. And it was tuesday two days ago too. Also, the official site says there will be a chat held last week at 3pm. However, when checking SimCity.com we find that the chat is not the 12th, but today, at 3pm PST. That's 11pm in Britain and midnight in Europe. This time it's art director Ocean Quigley paying a visit to the chatroom. More wrong dates: At SimCity Maxis says they'll be back 7 January, after taking a break of a few weeks. At the Sims' site, it's the 9th. Let's stick to the fact that they'll be back some time during week 2, and that the sites will be updated then. Just a week before the release of SimCity 4 and The Sims at PS2... That's all for this week, no SimDay next week or the week after, but the next SimDay will be 9 January.

Most searched video game word: Sims
Written at 00:52 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Sims is not topping another chart. At Google.com there's the 'zeitgeist' page. This page has been updated to show the year-end 2002 results. You can find the full charts over here. Interesting is that The Sims is topping the charts of the videogames. That means the term 'The Sims' was the most searched for at Google. Here's the full chart:
  1. The Sims
  2. Counter Strike
  3. GTA 3
  4. WarCraft 3
  5. Jedi Knight 2
  6. Morrowind
  7. Diablo 2
  8. Neverwinter Nights
  9. Max Payne
  10. Dungeon Siege

The Sims PS2 and SimCity 4 gold
Written at 00:16 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Sims on PS2 and SimCity 4 have gone gold. That means the games itself are ready, and the packaged are all put together and duplicated. Both these games will be released 14 January. To celebrate, IGN has posted movies of both games. Two videos of The Sims on PS2 can be found here, and a 30Mb SimCity 4 movie is here. People in the USA and Canada can buy this game 14 January, Europe (and probably other parts of the world too) will have to wait until 21 February for The Sims, or 17 January for SimCity 4.

First TSO Review
Written at 00:27 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The first review of The Sims Online has been spotted at GameSpot. It gets a total of 7.4 (out of 10). There are also 30 new screenshots with the review. Here's a snippet:
"As Lord British, we proceeded to trespass on other people's property, treat them as though they were our subjects, and demand food and entertainment. We didn't make many friends this way, but we got poked in the eyes several times and eventually were booted from the premises. We were pleased to see that getting booted from someone's home involves the physical act of getting kicked in the butt and were comforted to know that Sims Online players could easily protect their homes from unsavory characters such as ourselves by means of this particular feature."
So if you ever met Lord British, then you know who it was now. The full review is at this page. We now also have a TSO review index, which you can find over here. Europeans can get The Sims Online at 14 February.

TSO Review 2
Written at 01:25 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
I've found another review of The Sims Online at Games Domain:
"Even now that the game's in US stores, many pre-release bugs remain, such as the occasional inability to enter your own house, the inability to look around the neighbourhood, disappearing items, and increasing lag that slows the game to a crawl. For that matter, the game designers were still making major gameplay tweaks related to skills, jobs and money on the release date as they struggle to fix an imbalanced game. While we're confident they will eventually work out these issues, the game could look very different in three months than it does today. It will likely be nothing more than ICQ with 3D avatars instead of what most people would call a game."
I guess there are still quite some patches to come for this game when I read this. The whole, rather criticising, review can be read by following this link.

Win TSO
Written at 01:32 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
More news about The Sims Online: you can get this game for practically nothing, which would save you $50 (the monthly fee will still have to be paid) - including a one month game time which is included in the game by default. The site giving it away is GameZone, at this page. All you have to do is fill out a simple form, and the contest is open world-wide! The contest closes 23 December at midnight EST, so you have to hurry to enter. Note that you may only send one entry per day too.

SimDay 2 This week...
Written at 01:50 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
The official site has been updated again yesterday, with some nice things. First of all, there are the press releases of the going-gold of The Sims for PS2 and SimCity 4. Besides that, there are two new objects from The Sims Online which can be downloaded to The Sims (Offline). One is a new Intel computer, the other is the McDonalds 'food kiosk'. The advertising from these companies has now also hit The Sims 1.0... Unfortunately it are English-only versions, the international versions of these objects will be coming in January. You can download them both (296 Kb for the computer, 1.60 Mb for the food kiosk) from Get Cool Stuff. Maxis has now gone on their break, so this should've been their last update until 9 January...

Donation Files policy change & special offer
Written at 22:53 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
We have slightly changed our donations policy. The special files will be donations-only for 3 months. That means the current downloads for December won't be available for free until March. However, when you donate you will usually get only the username and password of the files of that month. As that might mean you cannot get older files unless you wait a few months, we've come up with a solution: if you pay $5 (or the equivalent of that) or more, you get two usernames and passwords (the current month, and the month before that). For $10 we give you all the files of the current and the past 2 months. As we've only just started with donations, this method isn't active yet until next month... if we didn't have the special offer!

Our offer is valid during December and January. If you donate this or next month, then you will get the files for these 2 months for any amount of money. You don't have to pay $5 or more for these files. That means you get twice the amount of files for just one price! If you donate now, we will send you the username and password for the files of January once they've been added. Please donate, we need the money! Without your donations, we will not be able to continue with this site. We need at least 300 ($450) in 4 months time, so please help us! We really appreciate it, even if you donate just $1. You can donate at this page. Thank you.

TSO Interview at TechTV
Written at 23:02 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
TechTV has posted an interview with Will Wright about The Sims Online. It has some interesting questions:
"TechTV: Was there a goal during development to produce something that wouldn't be addicting?"

"Wright: I don't think you can really control that, because certain players will come into this and project so much into it and get very involved with it. You don't want to do anything to destroy that, where you'd basically have to make the game worse almost to prevent that from happening. I think what you want to do is make sure that the game doesn't force the other people to do that or else fall behind. I've been in several situations where I'm in a house with roommates and some of the roommates are playing several hours a day, maybe eight hours a day, others are playing three hours a day, and others are playing one hour per day or less. And it works out. The fact that this group of people can play together but yet be playing in totally different levels of involvement is pretty important."
The whole interview is at this page.

IGN's first impressions of TSO
Written at 23:20 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
IGN has been play-testing The Sims Online, and they have posted a preview of the game:
"Whatever the final result, the game has a wonderful concept, and when you read some of the ideas that Will Wright puts behind his game, it sounds all very interesting in an academic kind of way. Reams of data about friendship networks, geographic proximity, favorite activities, etc., are being collected here, and I'm sure it's all very interesting and exciting for him. And I wish him the best in his game-making, he is one of a handful of designers in this industry with both the clout and the vision to force through some genuinely new and interesting."
IGN will probably post a full review after their break, so some time after January 6th. This preview is also not in our review index, we're going to wait for the final review instead. You can read this first impressions article at this page.

Be interviewed about The Sims
Written at 23:32 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
If you want to participate in an interview with Gamer.tv then you can be lucky. They'll be posting a feature about The Sims in the future, and they're looking for a female player from the New York (USA) area, preferrably with a family on her own. Don't contact us if you're interested, but please drop Lee Smith a line.

Written at 23:32 by Sumit - 0 comments.
Gifts and decor for everyone! Replace those annoying flamingos with the more seasonal Candy Canes. Also is the New Age Way Lamp which was brougt back from the archives. For ages this lamp's design print layed hidden away in a long forgotten place. Don't forget to pick up a teddy bear or two that have already been released for weeks. Well these things shall bring your sims delight, Merry Christmas and to all a good night.

Pick it up here late shoppers: Christmas Shopping
*Note* The pictures look a bit bad since they only come in such limited quality, so if they look ugly in the picture always remember they look great in the game.

Merry Christmas
Written at 00:08 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
From the whole team of The Sims Zone, I want to wish everybody a merry christmas. We hope you will have a nice time. Don't forget your Sims though, they want to celebrate it too. Sumit posted some objects this year, but why not check out some of last year's christmas files? Look at BettyJoe's Christmas packs. Updating at The Sims Zone will continue, although it will be a bit less than usual. Happy holidays!

Happy new year!
Written at 01:00 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Sims Zone wants to wish everybody a happy new year. Be careful with fireworks, and again, don't forget your Sims. We'll see you again in 2003, with more news, files, other unique things and much, much more. Make sure you come back here the next year though!

Note: Because of Christmas and New Year, the new donation files will be uploaded a bit later than planned. Expect those files soon though, just not 1 January. We apologise for that, but hope it won't stop you from donating. If you donate now, you will get both the files for January and December without any extra fee!
