2091. Why do sites become pay-sites?

There have been a lot of discussions in several forums, newsgroups and chats about pay-sites. A quite common opinion is: 'Pay-sites are stupid'. But does everybody really know
why sites become a pay-site? A quick answer is that they don't do it to make money. In fact, it is not an easy decision for a webmaster to make. I have explained reasons for becoming a pay-site (or even closing the site down) in a new editorial here at The Sims Zone: "
Pay-sites & closing sites - how come?".

After Bil Simser announced
6 new utilities last week, he now has announced a 7th one. 'Buzzword', as he calls it, will automatically categorize your objects using words in the name or description. You can enter multiple keywords, and then see what it comes up with. You can then select what category to move the results to, either one by one or all at once. The tool will not be beta-tested as all other tools, but of course Bil will test it himself. It'll be released soon at the
BluePrint website.

There's a little more news for all Macintosh fans that I missed
last time when
Aspyr published the system requirements. After looking a little more on their site, I've now also found that Hot Date on Macintosh will be released in
May 2002. It is now still in Alpha stage which means that there is still quite some work to be done, like the fixing of errors etc., but most features have been implemented. System requirements can be found
here.

We have found out that apparantly the skin pack with the winning skins of the Hot or Not contest at
the official site doesn't have the bmp files in it. That means when you install the pack, you still don't get any new skins, only new meshes. We will tell you when the file has been fixed, so you can have the winning skins in your game, or when there's more news about this.

To get back on last week's poll that was closed a day ago: it looks like Livin' Large is the most popular expansion pack, with 222 votes of people who have that. Runner-up is Hot Date with 208 votes in total, and House Party follows with 194 votes. 163 people who have voted have all 3 expansion packs. 28 of the 272 votes told us about 10% of you only have the original game without an expansion pack. Detailed results and results of older polls can be found in the
poll archive.

It's not an extremely busy SimDay again, but there's something. First of all, the winners of the Hot or Not skin contest have been announced, and Westwood (Colleagues of Maxis) has made 20 skins. That makes the grand total of 24 new skins to download...

Bil Simser, the famous Canadian who made BluePrint, has announced 6 new utilities that will be released soon. Those are: 'SimVentory', 'Shotgun', 'RugWeaver', 'SimBar', 'Jobby' and 'Cabins'. SimVentory will make html pages of your installed add-ons like objects, walls, etc. Shotgun will find conflicts and errors in your installed objects. RugWeaver allows you to make your own rugs, and SimBar is an Internet Explorer bar that gives you quick access to several sim sites. Jobby is a career editor and Cabins can convert CMX/SKN files to binaries and vice versa. It'll also check them for errors. For more (detailed) information, visit the
BluePrint website.

A couple of days 6 new screenshots of The Sims Online were posted at
GameSpot.com. The Sims Online will be released late this year, and
rumours are that it'll cost $50 to buy, and then $10 per month to play. Those prices haven't been officially confirmed by Maxis though. European prices are also unknown. You can see the new screenshots
here.

We have slightly enhanced the registration pages. You are now shown the time you registered in the end. Also, I now get an email with the information every time somebody registers. The main advantage: if you don't get the e-mail that's sent automatically when registering, it's now easier to get your account working...
