Getting Critical
Bugs

Nightlife is not perfect and there were quite a few bugs in the game when it was released. Fortunately, most of these have been addressed, with the recently patch but these should have been addressed before the game was released. Apart from the Karaoke bug where the sound was not synched with the actions, the bugs in NL have not marred my enjoyment of it that much. I have known of other games released by other software houses that have completely failed because of more bugs than a cockroach-infestation in Sim Tower.

Before the patch, I was still getting messages telling me babies were online and available to chat. This was a problem that was around for sometime and should have already been addressed. I've had some sims completely lose their plumbob and train of thought, even when cheats were not activated for this purpose. After a bit of search, I found the disembodied plumbob in the corner of the lot. Since the patch, no babies have been using the internet and I've haven't needed to paste "Lost - Neon-Green Plumbbob" posters on the lampposts in my neighborhoods.

A small bug I noticed is that the beam from car headlights could even penetrate a solid halfwall. Either the walls are in actuality made of paper or the military should be utilising the technology in those headlights in beam weaponry research.

Interface Gripes

There were several elements from TS1 that I would have liked to have seen in TS2 by now. Firstly, you can still only locate family members when you are on any lot, be it "at home" or in the community. I have thought visitors have gone home, only to find one of them sat on a bench under a tree in the back garden. With TS1, you were able to double-click on anyone's icon and if they were on the same lot, it would center on them. It is about time this was implemented into TS2.

Another little thing I would have liked to have seen by now is a hotkey combination for saving. Sorry, Maxis, but I have mentioned it before and I am going to carry on mentioning it until it is implemented into the game. When I am playing a game, I don't want to be distracted by having to go to options and have to click on the save icon. Also, if my mouse lets me down, I'm stuck. CTRL+S has been the combination used in TS1 and in the various SimCities. It doesn't seem to be a hotkey combo for anything else in TS2 so can anyone tell me the reason why it cannot be put in this game?

Also, I am still waiting (im)patiently for the ability for us to view our movies ingame. I'm not after anything fancy. Just the ability to be able to view them and if necessary to delete them. For example, suppose you make a movieclip and you are not sure if it has come out the way you want it, you don't want to have to Alt-Tab out of the game - or even save and exit the game - to run your movie viewer. It's better to find ingame whether the clip worked or not and then whether not to save the game so you can replay the scene and take the clip again. Steve Spielburg doesn't send the cast and crew home between takes of a scene. You shouldn't have to either. We don't want anything that fancy, Maxis. We can always do the editing and smart special effects in a dedicated program after the raw footage has been taken.

Feeling Down About Downtown

When I heard that sims could live downtown, I had hoped for something different to the usual. I had high hopes for apartment buildings, but sadly this is not to be. I suppose I may have been spoilt with the idea of dormitories in University Town and thought that our downtown dwellers could finally live in the same apartment building as some of the townies. From flophouses for the low income and unemployed sims to condominiums and hotels for the higher income sims, I was looking forward to the different options that would be available.

Sadly not. The only apartment blocks we get to see are ploppable decorations in the neighborhood. This is an opportunity I feel has been missed. Your sims only get to live in houses that can be pretty much like any other that they could have otherwise occupied in the original home neighborhood.

Apart from being able to party all night, downtown does not really offer that much more, but that's just my opinion.

  • Do I have to go downtown to find a restaurant? No.
  • Do I have to go downtown to find a nightclub? No.
  • Do I have to go downtown to do the smustle? Well .... no.
  • Do I have to go downtown to find a poker club? No again. You can even play poker at home.
  • What about playing bowling? Guess what. You can play that in your neighborhood as well. Even at home.
  • Don't I gain skills from going to a downtown skilling lot? I refer the right honourable reader to the last five answers.
  • Did I have to go downtown to find the top vampires? Yes, but not everyone wants to be a vampire.
  • Do I have to go downtown to find Mrs. Crumplebottom? Yes, but who wants to be hit with a handbag because you kissed your date?

If there was one central downtown that all of the sims from different neighborhoods could visit, then perhaps it would have been something more special.

Despite these criticisms, I do like Downtown, though. Although some building parts are empty shells, all of the lots from the default Downtown that I have been able to visit have been well designed.
