So far still no SimDay, but that doesn't mean nothing happens. For instance,
GameSpot has posted 5 new screenshots of Unleashed, the fifth expansion pack for The Sims. You can see sims gardening (as below), or some in a pet shop. You can see all of them
right here. Also,
SimsZone.de has visited the german "
Games Convention". From there, they brought a couple of new screenshots of The Sims Online. You can see bits of the world in two of them, and sims in interaction in two other shots. Visit
this page there to see them all. As it seems that GameSpot is currently not showing the screenshots correctly (not to me anyway), you can see all five Unleashed screenshots at
SimsZone.de too.
1912. Making friends is hard...

...for Sims anyway. At least that's what their gods - that's you who's reading this - say. However, opinions were divided. In last week's poll, 38 of 144 people told us it's quite difficult for their sims to make friends, while 28 people said their sims have no problems with it whatsoever. Third place with 27 votes and 18.75% came the option "Easy" which means the sims of those 27 people find it easy to make friends. "Very difficult" followed closely as fourth though, with 25 votes. 12 others voted "Very easy", while 9 gods voted their Sims don't need friends. Just 5 people told us that their Sims can't make friends somehow. The full results can be found in the
poll archive. This week it's Sim Brother nomination and eviction week, so visit
Sim Brother II: The Contenders for that now. After reading up on today's happenings, vote for who you want to leave the house.
1913. Unleashed Interview

The Gamers' Temple has posted an interview with Jenna Chalmers from Maxis. She is a designer, and is currently working on The Sims Unleashed. There's quite some information about Unleashed in it, but not a whole lot of new things. However, there is a bit of an interesting tip in it:
"As far as pets go, dogs and cats require a lot of care in their first days home from the adoption center. While it may be tempting to buy several at once, for a smoother ride you may want to bring them home one at a time."
It also tells us that your Sims need quite some charisma to get their parrots talking. Get your sims ready for that, you can already train them for that now! Also, it seems that they've added skins they made for Create-A-Sim - which comes with The Sims Deluxe. However, that's all they say so we still don't know if that comes with this expansion pack too. Plus, there'll be some new music in Unleashed which, according to Jenna, is just great. We'll see about all that in September/October when this new expansion is due. The whole interview can be read from
this page (it's a few pages long), all at
the Gamers' Temple.

At the Taiwanese site of EA, a couple of new screenshots of Unleashed have appeared. One of them shows the method of transportation to the community areas: a city bus. Another one lets us see what selecting a pet is like. The rest are basically some screenshots of shops and community areas. Go
this page to see all the screenshots.
1915. Deluxe word from Maxis

Three days ago a Maxis official posted something on the BBS of
the official site with some things in it about The Sims Deluxe. They aren't too good for us loyal fans, as basically it says the same as the press release - and that Maxis has, in their opinion, put in a lot of time and effort. It also says that there is a rebate coupon of $10 included with the pack, but as we know that only counts for people in the US or Canada, with original proof of purchase and that the action is only valid until the end of this year. It may not be just a compilation of The Sims and Livin' Large, but still it doesn't sound worth another $30 or even $40. You still have to buy the game
and the expansion pack
again if all you want are just a few extras. And that costs you $40, only a few lucky people will be able to get $10 back. And I still think it are only just a few extras, as 25 objects and 50 clothing options may sound nice, but in the end you will probably be disappointed.

As a notice at
the official site says, the Maxis sites will be down from tomorrow until tuesday 27 August. That means you cannot visit
thesims.ea.com,
simcity.ea.com and
simgolf.ea.com during this period. The sites should be back online by the time it gets wednesday for Maxis. As there are only major upgrades to the network (and so not the sites), you probably won't see any changes to the sites afterwards.
1917. TSO Box Shot

Some news that's actually new this time: the box-shot of The Sims Online has been found on the internet.
EB-Games is now showing the box which looks absolutely not like the boxes of The Sims games as we know them. Also, it doesn't look like it's a DVD-style case that most games come into these days. If that means that The Sims Online will come in a box like the old days, is yet unknown. It might also mean that this is not the final box shot too. We will find out soon enough. Below is the box as it's been found:
1918. Will Wright interviewed again [Update]

Will Wright, designer of The Sims and SimCity, has been interviewed again. This time at
GameStudies. It's a long interview, with many, many questions. Here's a small highlight:
"In The Sims people tend to veer off in a different direction. Some people go off into the storytelling thing. So eventually the metaphor becomes that of a director on a set. Youre trying to coerce these actors into doing what you want them to do, but theyre busy leading their own lives. And so you get this weird conflict going on between you and The Sims where youre trying to tell a story with the game but they want to go off and eat, and watch TV, and do whatever."
So that's why we're always shouting at our game when the Sims don't do what we want them to do? Anyway, the whole interview doesn't discuss just The Sims, but also some of Will's other hobbies: robotics and board games, especially the game
Go. It also mentions The Sims Online and SimCity. The whole interview can be read
here.
Update: Apparently, this interview is nearly a year old (5 Sept 2001) and has slipped through as new news somehow. Nevertheless it's still worth the mention. Thanks to Sumit for noticing.
1919. How sociable are your sims?

Can your Sims make friends with other sims easily or not? If not, then Unleashed might be a nice expansion for you as the pets can help... but for now we are just asking you how hard your sims find it to make new friends. You see the question on the right, and can answer the most appropriate there. You can also vote right
here.
