Top Of The Pops
The current issue (Oct 2002) of PC Gamer magazine has some interesting statistics. It contains an article about the bestselling PC games of all time in the UK, and it makes good reading for the accountants of Electronic Arts. Here's where The Sims and its relations came in..

#1 - The Sims - Sold 750,000 in the UK since Feb 2000
#7 - The Sims: Livin' It Up - Sold 388,000 in the UK since Sept 2000
#21 - The Sims: Hot Date - Sold 240,000 in the UK since Nov 2001
#35 - The Sims: House Party - Sold 185,000 in the UK since April 2001
#46 - The Sims: On Holiday - Sold 149,000 in the UK since April 2002

Now, bearing in mind that this is the all time UK sales, to have all The Sims titles within the top fifty is quite an achievement. In fact, let's see if I can't use my University education for something for once! Here's some more statistics.
  • The Sims has sold more copies than Quake II (#34, 195k), Quake III (#50, 142k), Unreal Tournament (#41, 164k) and Deus Ex (#47, 146k) put together. By over a hundred thousand. Wow.
  • The rest of the top five was comprised of Half Life (#2, 470k), Worms (#3, 447k), Age Of Empires (#4, 418k) and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (#5, 408k). This means The Sims is in the lead by 280,000 copies. Blimey.
  • Adding together the figures, EA have sold 1,712,000 Sims products in the United Kingdom alone. Ker-ching!
  • Let's say The Sims itself sells at 30, and the expansions at 20. This would mean the sales total over 41,700,000. Sheesh.
I think this actually makes the $10 US only Sims Deluxe rebate look even worse, doesn't it? :)
