I have just purchased Sims 2...when I load it onto my computer, will my families from Sims 1 automatically be added to the Sims 2 game, or do I have to start all over? Will I have to rebuild houses, etc.?

You will have to create whole new families, houses and lives for your sims, because the Sims 2 is not an expansion pack. It is an entirely different and new game. You will hopefully be glad to start over, because of the many new options, such as aging. Nothing for the Sims 1 will be compatible with The Sims 2. Hope that helps, good luck.
