What is a Polygon count? On some custom meshes and objects the creator might say something like "The polygon count is low". I understand it slows the game down. But what is it?

3D objects are made by connecting the edges of triangles. Hundreds of these triangles are used to make complicated shapes like sim people. If the number of these "polygons" is doubled for more detail then the computer takes longer to move the shape around.
