ECTS 2002: TSO & PS2 screenshots
Written at 03:38 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The ECTS have been taking place again in the UK. The ECTS are more or less the European E3: an event of a couple of days, where new games of quite a lot of publishers and developers are being showcased. Most likely from there, PC.IGN.com has posted some new screenshots of The Sims Online. 12 in total to be precise. Titles as "My most liked list", "Sim Crater", "Liar -> Pimp -> Mounty" and "Ear smoker" sound interesting. Those are the names of the screenshots, which also look quite interesting. Want to have a look at them? Then simply go to the TSO Media Page at IGN. A small note from the editor though: "Some of these screens are new and some are most definitely old, but I am far too lazy to check them all.".

Also from the ECTS 2002 come screenshots of The Sims on Playstation 2. Those can be found at PS2.IGN.Com. There are another 12 shots. Some of them have been seen before though, like the Neighborhood screen. But the "Top Down" (below), "Entryway" and the "Where'd she go?" screenshots, as well as all the others sure look interesting. Have a peek right here.

Deluxe: What do you think?
Written at 02:00 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
If you visit this site recently, then you might have noticed our criticism towards Maxis, and even actions when it comes to The Sims Deluxe. There's been an open letter which later resulted in an Online Petition. Although the discussions have quieted down a bit now, the petition has received already 300 visitors who spent the time to sign it. The petition is still open to be signed right here. Now there's something else where you can quickly and anonymously show us your opinion: the weekly poll on this site. Simply vote on the right if you agree with that The Sims Deluxe is a rip off, or that you think it's totally the worth $30 or even $40. So, go to the right and vote, or visit this page to vote. Last week's was a Sim Brother II eviction poll, so you'll have to visit Sim Brother II to see those results... or you can go to the poll archive to see that poll's and all older poll's results. As always, the poll will close in a week.

The current issue (Oct 2002) of PC Gamer magazine has some interesting statistics. It contains an article about the bestselling PC games of all time in the UK, and it makes good reading for the accountants of Electronic Arts. Here's where The Sims and its relations came in..

#7 - The Sims: Livin' It Up - Sold 388,000 in the UK since Sept 2000
#21 - The Sims: Hot Date - Sold 240,000 in the UK since Nov 2001
#35 - The Sims: House Party - Sold 185,000 in the UK since April 2001

New objects added
Written at 22:09 by Carrie - 0 comments.
I have made a few new object additions today. The first object I have added is the Rise 'n' Shine Alarm Clock, which is perfect for getting those lazy Sims out of bed on time and it adds a little color to the bedroom too. Since Halloween is just around the corner, I have also added 2 new jack-o-lantern sets. The Light Colored Jack-O-Lantern Set has aqua, green and yellow colored pumpkins and the Dark Colored Jack-O-Lantern Set contains blue, purple and red pumpkins. They will all add some nice color to your Sims Halloween decorations!

SimDay: Something for last week
Written at 22:54 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week two 'new' things of one week old at the official site for SimDay. The first part is about 5 new exclusive screenshots at GameSpot. Something we posted about a week ago, in the "Screenshot Mania" post. For more details about those and more screenshots, go there. To go directly to the screenshot page, visit GameSpot. As for the other half of this week's SimDay: it's basically just a bit for the community 'update' there - that hasn't been updated since months. Isn't it time to do something about that Maxis? Anyway, it's about The Sims Resource turning 3 years old (happy birthday TSR!), and that because of that they've redesigned the site. The bit at the official site doesn't mention that it went pay too. You might've read more about it in this community news post also written last week. Next week? Maybe some old links again. Don't expect a community update anyway, there hasn't been one for months already.

Although it's just a monthly update, it gives more than 5 SimDays combined: the TSO update on its official site. For instance, there's a bit about the play test again:
"We expect to start selecting people for our play test within a few weeks, so make sure you have had your friends signed up for this newsletter, as it puts them in the pool of people we will invite to our play test. All the information on our playtest was in last month's update and can be found here."

One Year On ...
Written at 15:45 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
Exactly one year ago, a terrible chain of events began that involved everybody when the first hijacked airliner was crashed into the World Trade Center (Tower 1). This news post is just to remember all those who died, their family and friends and especially the brave members of the emergency services who died in the line of duty. This is something that nobody will forget.

The Sims Zone stands still for a moment as a mark of respect to remember everyone who suffered or are still suffering from the consequences of the terrorist attacks of September 11th last year. You are all in our thoughts.

Let us just hope and pray that something like that will never happen again.

Critical (and late) SV Review
Written at 23:59 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Sims Vacation has been out for over 5 months now, but there still is a new review of the game. And unlike many others, this one isn't that positive about the expansion. In fact, it gets just 6 out of 10, and the reviewer lets us know he really doesn't like EA milking out the game:
"Thinking of the secluded nerd stereotype that has played through all the expansion packs and is eagerly awaiting the next, will be still want to play a sequel or an online version when he finally tires of rehash? Companies have tried this before (cough, Tomb Raider, cough) and it nearly killed the series, and if this review turns more into an editorial, so be it, but I don't want to see a good series of games get turned backwards and despised (like Myst) because they were too successful for their own good."
It's obvious the expansion didn't really attract him. Interested in a critical view at Vacation? Read this page at ESCMag.

Poll Result: Deluxe is a rip-off
Written at 02:00 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
As part of our actions to give loyal The Sims fans the goodies that come with Deluxe for free, there's been a poll last week about it. And apparantly, most of you agree that The Sims Deluxe is a rip off. Exactly 61.11% - which is 77 of 126, voted for "Yes, The Sims Deluxe is a rip off". That's quite a lot against just 4 votes from people who said they'd get it without rebate for $40 (3 people, 2.38%) or without the rebate (just 1 person, 0.79%). 15 people, or 11.90 % said they don't mind getting the extras on a separate CD for a small fee, like $5 or $10. 11.90%, exactly 15 votes - again - have never heard of The Sims Deluxe, where 7.94% (10 votes) said they don't need the extras in the game. 5 people, or 3.97%, said not to have The Sims or Livin' Large yet, so it's not as much of a rip off. That leaves exactly 0 votes for "I'll give away The Sims and LL, and then buy Deluxe". The conclusion that can be drawn from this: The visitors of a Sims fan site like this one generally think The Sims Deluxe is definately not worth the money EA asks for it. To support our actions, please sign our petition.

This week's poll: somebody has to leave the Sim Brother II house again. Who is going, is up to you and you can now decide on the right or this page. As always, all our previous polls can be rechecked - but not voted for - in the poll archive.

SimDay Report: Better but still far from best
Written at 20:31 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This SimDay two actually new things. Woohoo! The first one is something we've seen enough of over the past few weeks: a link to a preview. This time it's one of Unleashed at GameGal:
"No Sims expansion would be complete without new furniture (in this case a New Orleans French Quarter theme) and new careers (veterinarian, chef, circus professional). Families can also embark on a Zone-diet lifestyle by growing a vegetable garden with seeds purchased from a Sims-owned-and-operated garden store. Youll be able to live on the results or sell the produce for a few extra bucks. Your pets can get into the garden lifestyle as well, by helping chase away pesky gophers and rabbits."
To read the whole thing, which doesn't give too much new information and seems to be another press release coming directly from EA, simply visit this page. The other half of the SimDay is that there'll be a chat event about Unleashed next Tuesday at 3PM PST, with producer Jonathan Knight and designer Jenna Chalmers. To visit the chat, go this page. You have to be product registered at the official site to be able to visit the chat. That's all for this SimDay that's slightly better than what we've had the past few weeks...

The Neighborhood Handler 4.0 - Coming soon!
Written at 14:00 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
It's been a while since version 3.8 of The Neighborhood Handler was released. It's also been a while since the last news bit about it. However, the project isn't dead. Actually, I'm currently working on a new major release: version 4.0. Besides compatibility with Unleashed, there will also be several other changes, some quite major and some just minor. A few of the major differences between 3.x and 4.0:
  • The graphics mode will no longer exist (because of the following change)
  • You can have 99 back-ups and 99 regular neighborhoods, making the total of 198 neighborhoods... More than you'll ever need
  • Back-up and Neighborhood Details are stored in a better way, and so less error will occur. This makes back-ups made with v4.0 incompatible with v3.8, but you can convert old back-ups to the new version with just a few clicks. And yes, you will indeed be able to give regular neighborhoods names and/or comments
  • The ability to zip back-ups. This makes back-ups a bit smaller saving some diskspace. Also, that adds the ability to password-protect back-ups. Note that this doesn't work for regular neighborhoods.
  • A lot of rewritten and revised code, resulting in the fixes of a few bugs. For instance, the bug that causes the dialog with the actions happening (e.g. while making a back-up) to stay up when TNHH is deactivated during the progress, will be fixed in version 4.

One thing will stay the same though, and that's that it will be free as always. As most of the new version is already done, I expect to be able to release the new version early November, or even sooner. It's done whenever it's done, but it won't be released until after the European release of The Sims Unleashed. Keep checking this space for the latest news, and maybe even some screenshots.

    5 Unleashed, 5 PS2 screenshots
Written at 00:00 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
PC.IGN.com has posted a few new screenshots of Unleashed. 5 to be precise. This time there are images of the community areas, namely a pet show and a farmer's market. There's also a filled table. As if that's not enough, you can see some pet training in action, and last but not least a cat that wants a bird. The screenshots are quite nice and worth checking out right here.

There are also 5 new screenshots of The Sims on PS2, like some sims working hard - in a hot tub, some skill fixing going on, the creating of a female sim, a nice house overview and finally some more hot-tubbing. And they're all on this page with some more older shots.

    Advertising in TSO
Written at 23:58 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
Reuters has posted an interesting report about The Sims Online. It's all about McDonald's putting some advertising in the game, which they pay EA for. The same goes for Intel. Apparantly, EA needs to make more money from the game, and therefore they've decided to put in some product placement. Intel and McDonald's were interested because the game attracts many young players. One way that it'd be shown, is in the way that you can buy a McDonald's restaurant. As it's an online game, it'll be easy for Maxis/EA to put in future advertisers in the future. Something slightly similar already happened in The Sims when the Pepsi Drinks machine was released, although I'm not sure if Pepsi actually paid for that. The whole article can be found right here. Your opinion on this matter can of course be put in the comments of this article (only for registered members - it's free).

    Chat transcript
Written at 23:25 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Last night at 11PM British time (3PM PST or Midnight Central European Time) a chat event with Jenna Chalmers and Jonathan Knight was held at the official site. Another site, WorldSims already has the transcript available for you. Here's a small snippet, about the new lots and its interface, of the chat visited by over 250 people:
"We used lot numbers 50-80 for the new lots. The new larger neighborhood will be the first thing you see! No need to push any buttons or scroll anywhere. Its all right there in front of you. Downtown is the area that comes with the "Hot Date" expansion, "Old Town" are the community lots that come in "Unleashed""
We also get to know quite a lot of other things, like there won't be any leashes, but you will be able to get collars for your pets. Also, pets will dig into garbage or in the garden just to amuse themselves. So make sure they don't get bored! The Unleashed expansion pack will be released 23 September in the US, and early October in Europe. Visit this page at WorldSims to see the whole transcript.

    SimDay - They're improving! A bit!
Written at 13:56 by Matthew - 0 comments.
Time once again for SimDay, that event when the official Sims website gives fans of The Sims a load of information they probably already know. Yep, I'm being cynical again. Anyways, this week they've got two little links for us. While WorldSims may have published the chat transcripts yesterday, the official site has them today. Whoo-hoo. Here's another quote from the chat:
'What kind of pet stuff can you get?'
'Most of the new objects in this pack are for pets so you will have plenty of shopping to do. Some of my favorite pet objects are the wooden cat climbing house and the fancy bed. There are baths, toys, scratching posts, litter boxes... everything you need to keep your pets happy.'
To read the transcript (again) click here. The other link is for another preview of The Sims Unleashed from Gamespot. It's even fairly new! They added it to Gamespot yesterday, apparently. If you wish to read it then just click here. More SimDay next week!

    The Sims Deluxe Discussions
Written at 23:27 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Recently, since the press release about The Sims Deluxe came out, there have been lots of discussions about it. Many - according to a recent poll at this site, a lot of people think it's a rip-off. But many people in the discussions had no objections to Maxis releasing the pack the way they did. Now The Sims Deluxe has been released, and a few people had commented on it. As said, there are some people like this person (WorldSims forums) who like it. Apparantly the Creator is worth some money (in my opinion, I still doubt $40 - which most people will pay for it - is really worth it). Also it seems that it loads a bit faster and graphics look slightly better. But as Davybear commented in alt.games.the-sims the extras are of the type that "Most of them you would not download if you saw them on a web site". If you'd like to see for yourself, then here (at Club MOTS) are some pictures. I must agree with Davybear that they're not too original and do not really seem to be worth 5 bucks for all of them. Even if it was all great, it still doesn't rule out part of the open letter about neglected Europeans: Europeans cannot get a rebate. At all. And considering the costs there are to make the program - probably no more than $5000 - after which the costs per package (box, cds and paperwork etc) are no more than $5, they'd need just 1000 sales of $10 each (with just those extras, for the loyal fans) to start making a profit. No doubt that they'll reach that from all the 6 or 7 million fans who already bought the game. As many people already paid nearly $200 for The Sims (if not more) it seems that Maxis and EA could easily sell the extras separately for a small fee, or even give them away for free to fill up some SimDays - which have been pretty worthless recently. Of course it's still up to you whether or not to buy The Sims Deluxe, but I do not recommend it. That doesn't mean you have to listen to me, but you don't have to listen to EA either...

The Sims Unleashed - Nearly Unleashed!
Written at 01:16 by Matthew - 0 comments.
Those of you in the US are 'lucky' enough to now be able to trot down to your nearest GameStop, EB or whatever and pick up a copy of the latest Sims expansion pack. However, us Europeans aren't much worse off.. we've only got around nine more days to wait! The Sims: Unleashed is currently scheduled to be coming out on Friday 4th October, so it won't be long before you can play with your pets. Incidentally, for our UK readers, I'd recommend you take a look at Play.com where it's available for just 14.99.

As you'd expect, as it's out in the US, reviews have started appearing. One of the first of these is over at IGN.com, where it earns a fairly repectable score of seven out of ten. Only fairly respectable, though. The review doesn't paint that good a picture of the pack, really.. here's a quote:

'..by now, the only people still playing The Sims (besides those people who just bought a computer and with it their first game) are serious, hardcore Sims players who are going to buy every expansion pack regardless. And we've already downloaded hundreds if not thousands of new skins and objects, so that part of the expansion isn't very impressive. So once the novelty of cleaning up after cats and dogs wears off, we're left with a $30 utility that adds twenty new lots to each neighborhood.'
The full review is well worth a read, and can be found here.

The Sims (PS2) Delayed To 2003
Written at 01:21 by Matthew - 0 comments.
In a little announcement over at the official Sims site, it has been stated that both the Playstation 2 version of the Sims and SimCity 4 have been delayed from their expected November launches to early 2002. Sigh. I was looking forward to the PS2 version as well. Still, here's the official line on the movement of the dates:
'Maxis is moving the launch of SimCity 4 and The Sims for the PS2 to January 2003. We know you're looking forward to both games and that this might be a disappointment. You should know that both titles are looking great and are a blast to play. Moving them to the beginning of next year will give us the opportunity to do a little extra fine-tuning and polishing of the games. We'll also be revamping SimCity.com and posting the most up to date information regarding both games on our websites.'
More at the official site, which is here.

    SimDay Preview!
Written at 01:28 by Matthew - 0 comments.
Amazingly enough, it looks like there might actually be something worthwhile coming on SimDay tomorrow. No, really, there might. Along with the release date changes mentioned below, the official site brings (for the first time in quite a while) a preview of what to expect this SimDay. It mentions that they'll be releasing the new 'Unleashed Lot Exchange', as well as the 'Deluxe MySims feature'. Hmm... no further information is there, so I can't tell you anymore yet.

However, only one more day to wait! Come back around mid-to-late Thursday, and I'll fill you in further on the details of these new site features. Promise!

    The Sims Deluxe - Reviewed
Written at 01:34 by Matthew - 0 comments.
Scouring the internet for news late on a Wednesday, guess what I found? Only the first review of The Sims Deluxe! Well, maybe. The oddly named Gamenikki has a review of the new version of The Sims, and they actually rate it fairly highly. It scores nine out ten. However, they do have some views not a million miles away from those expressed on this very site:
'If you DONT own The Sims already, then this is a must-purchase. If you own just the original game, then I would still recommend the package because of the expansion pack, extras and a $10 rebate if you own the original. This would have the expansion pack and additional content (of which there is a nice amount) priced at a reasonable $25 or so. For gamers who own The Sims and Livin Large already, there is really no compelling reason to pay top dollar for essentially The Sims Creator, lots of new outfits and a few new objects. Yes, The Sims Deluxe Edition reeks of cash-in, but like the Malibu Stacy with just a new hat, you know youll buy it anyways.'

    Get well soon, ChEeTaH
Written at 01:39 by Andy - 7 comments.
Our hardworking webmaster has been working too hard and is out of action with RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) in his right arm. He will hopefully be back in action in a week or so when his arm has been properly rested.

ChEeTaH has asked me to apologise for those of you who are eagerly awaiting TNHH v4, the latest version of his excellent neighborhood handling program. This will be made available when he has recovered.

In the meantime, the rest of the staff and I hope to keep you informed of the latest goings-on in the Sims Community and keep you stocked with plenty of new downloads for your virtual people.

Get well soon, mate. We miss you.

SimDay - Unleashed Lot Exchange Launched!
Written at 15:57 by Matthew - 0 comments.
The other main thing added today (or should that be late yesterday?) to the official site was the lot exchange feature for the Unleashed expansion pack. Again, not much use for us Europeans right now, but at least we can take heart in currently being in the lead in the Ryder Cup, eh? :) Besides, not too much longer to go till we get it. Here's the blurb on it from the website:
'The new Unleashed lot exchange Is open for business! Want to add a cafe or grocery store to your neighborhood? Search the Unleashed Neighborhood Exchange for the latest in user-created neighborhood lots.'
If you wish to take a look around, then use this link to go right over there. Oh, and the fourth and final thing added as part of SimDay was a transcript from a recent SimCity 4 chat. Not entire relevant, but for the sake of completeness click here to read it. Well, that's certainly one of the most packed SimDays I can remember. Keep it up Maxis!

    SimDay - New Unleashed Download
Written at 16:02 by Matthew - 0 comments.
Finally, after a huge gap, we have a new download from the official Sims site. The object in question is a shrimp cart, and is compatible only with the new Unleashed expansion pack - out now in the US, and soon everywhere else! The object weighs in at 1.57mb, and the official line on it is as follows: 'Now your Sims can enjoy a Shrimp-On-A-Stick from this colorful local vendor. Unleashed owners should check their local community lot for this delicious treat.'

Want to download it? You'll be needing this link then!

    SimDay - MySims Launched!
Written at 16:11 by Matthew - 0 comments.
This weeks SimDay is here, finally. Wonder what caused the delays? Anyway, the first item on the agenda is the new MySims feature on the site itself. If you've been there and logged in in the last twenty-four hours or so, you may have seen a little logo for it. Wondered what it's about? Well wonder no more. Here's a brief summary from the help pages:
'Your SimPage is a place to keep track of things you've uploaded to the Sims Exchange, as well as all of the cool things you've seen that other people have uploaded. Express yourself! Show people that you've noticed their cool creations! Trying to find a Sim you uploaded weeks ago? Go to your SimPage and you can find your Sim as easy as 1-2-3.'
Also interesting about this whole feature is that it appears to be another way in which they're trying to sell you the Deluxe edition. For instance, Deluxe SimsPages won't have banner ads like the non-deluxe ones. Deluxe owners get to do more customising. Deluxe pages are the only ones that can be added to SimsLists. Any views on this whole issue? Make sure you leave a comment here then. For more on MySims, go to the official site, or more specifically the help pages for it. But that's not all this week.. keep reading!
