New Poll
Written at 20:47 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
You may have already seen it: a new poll was launched last night. This time it's all about the patch of the Sims 2. The options to vote for are on the right. Just pick your choice and hit the vote button, and it'll be counted. You can do the same on the latest poll page. Last week our poll was about the Sims 2 University, specifically if you like the information that's been released so far. Well over 50% said it'll rock by voting "Way to go Maxis!" Almost 25% wants to know more first, and about 11.5% told us it sounds nice. Hitting the small numbers, less than 7% will probably not buy it. 2% hated college themselves, and won't like their Sims going there either. Finally, the last 4% didn't know what the poll was about. In total 295 people voted. To see the exact results, check the results page.

University Images
Written at 22:08 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
There are several images about the Sims 2 University. To start off with the screenshots: the scoop newsletter, that started in the time before the Sims 2 was released, was sent out a few days ago. Included were two screenshots of the first expansion pack of the Sims 2. The third screenshot comes from the official Swedish site. It may look familiar, but it's the same scene as another screenshot, taken from a different angle. Spanish fansite SimsExpress found some artwork on GameStop, which can also be seen below. As if that's not enough, there's now also a (preliminary) logo. It's still just a small image, although a bigger version will probably be released by EA in the future. This one comes from the official UK site. All the images are shown below, click the thumbnails to see larger versions.

SimDay - Strangerhood and Object
Written at 22:19 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
After releasing the patch and the Urbz as Sims 2 earlier this week, the site has again been updated. This time, it is SimDay again, and it brings two more things. The first thing is a new episode of the Strangerhood. This third episode is titled "We Have a Floater." It can be downloaded from Strangerhood's archive page or the official site's Strangerhood page. As usual it comes in three formats (two on the official site): QuickTime, DivX and Windows Media.

Furthermore, there's a new object made by Maxis for the Sims 2. With this object, a "Chanukah Menorah," your Jewish sims can celebrate Chanukah with this object. You can download it from the exchange.

UrbzDay [Update]
Written at 22:24 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
Besides SimDay, there's also an Urbzday this week. It's not much though - just a new comic. This time Jayde visits Diamond Heights, trying to look right for the party. If you want to know if with the help of Darius it all works out, then check out the comic by Chynna Clugston.

[Update 5 December, 0:05] The site has had a few more updates. There's a note about the toys based on the game. The action figures based on the GBA version of the game are out. The Miniopolis pack contains 20 2-inch characters and pets, whereas the Console Edition has 10 4-inch articulated characters. See the Atomic Toys Urbz site for more details. There's also a little note about the Urbz object for the Sims 2.

Our Urbz Review
Written at 00:36 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Urbz - Sims in the City The Urbz has been out for a while already, but now we too have our review up. I've played the PlayStation2 version of the game for quite a few hours, and my opinion has been posted. If you want to know whether you should get it for the holidays, or perhaps a little later, then read the review!

University Chat
Written at 00:41 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
Maxis will be organising a chat next Thursday. As you might expect, it's about the first expansion pack for the Sims 2: University. Several developers of the team will join the chatroom at 3pm PST (11pm GMT, midnight in Western Europe) next Thursday. Have your questions for them ready and ask them there at the chat. The room will open approximately 10 minutes before the start of the chat, and if it gets too busy you won't be able to join anymore. The developers who will be there are from the design team: Charles London, Hunter Howe, Kevin Hogan, and Thomas Vu. You can enter the chat when it's open from the chat page, where older chat transcripts can also be found.

New Poll
Written at 21:10 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
You've probably already seen it, if not you can still do so now: we have a new weekly poll up. Christmas is coming our way soon, so we're wondering if you think Santa will bring you anything Sims this year. Let us know by voting on the right or on the latest poll page.

Last week we asked you about the patch. It doesn't seem to fix everyone's problems. In fact, the results are all very close. Those who didn't try the patch yet are up on top though, with 17% of the votes, which are 30 of 176 votes. Second are the 28 who said they don't need it, followed very closely by the 27 who don't have the Sims 2 to patch. Then there's a little gap closed by the 21 (12%) who say all the problems are solved. Tied are 18 who said most problems are gone, and another 18 who are having some different problems, not really Sims-related. The final three are "not all but some" with 16 votes (9%), "It doesn't solve anything" with 12 votes (7%) and finally there are 6 (3.4%) who claim only a few problems have been solved, but far from all of them. Lost the overview? Then check out the results page.

UrbzDay
Written at 21:15 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week's UrbzDay is quite small, again. It's just a Comic, and that's all. Jayde enters Cental Station. Whereas previous "comix" are all 2 pages long, this one fills 4 pages. You can read the comic by Evan Dorkin now on the official site.

SimDay
Written at 21:21 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
Besides the chat tonight, which we told you about earlier this week, this week's SimDay has one interview. Pinstar1161 made up a challenge in the official BBS, called "The Legacy Challenge." This challenge asks of you to play the Sims 2 without cheats or cheat objects. Raise 10 generations of Sims, starting with a single Sim on an empty 5x5 lot, and make them as great as possible. The better you do, the more points you score. All for a bit of honour, there's nothing to win. Pinstar1161 has been interviewed about this famous challenge, which can now be read on the official site. If you want to check it out, check the interview page.

University Update: Chat Transcript, T-Mail 2, Screens
Written at 02:32 by ChEeTaH - 5 comments.
There's quite a bit of new info about the first expansion pack for the Sims 2. The first thing is the transcript of last night's chat. The main new things that Maxis told us there are:
  • Young adults can Woohoo and get engaged, but they cannot get pregnant or married
  • Many University objects, but also wallpapers etc, can be used in the regular neighbourhood too
  • Even campus objects like Espresso bars, music lounges, and more, can be used in the regular community areas
  • The exact duration of the Young Adult stage is still unsure
  • Teens might have the aspiration to go to college
  • There will be cell phones, with which you can call but also send text messages (SMS)
  • The streaker is an NPC. Your Sims can become friends with them, and eventually even marry them if you want
  • Sims will have a schedule of classes to attend to
  • Teens can choose to become a young adult and go to college, or to skip that life stage and become adults straight away (like it's done currently)
  • There will be new types of food
There's a lot more than that though. Check the full transcript for the rest.

Furthermore, Sims Express reports that the expansion pack will be released (Wednesday) 16 March in Spain. That would probably mean 17 or 18 March for most of Europe, and 15 March for the USA. However, the dates for other regions in the world (other than Spain) are not yet officially announced or confirmed.

Finally, there's a second e-mail from Tim LeTourneau, Senior Producer of the Sims 2 University. He tells that Young Adulthood will occupy 20 Simdays (contrary to the "unknown" mentioned in the chat). This is different from what was reported at first, twice the life time of a teen. Tim talks a bit more about the young adulthood that your Sims might experience. Along with the mail came two screenshots, which you can see below. Use the Read More link (or scroll down a bit) to read the entire e-mail.

Christmas Wishes from EA
Written at 14:11 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
EA Spain has posted several artworks wishing Sims 2 fans a merry christmas. Sims Express reports this. The three artworks show some Sims with a christmas tree and, of course, Santa. EA in Spain has also posted some exclusive skins of Santa on their official site. They can be found in a special Christmas page on the official site. Visit the Christmas portal and look under the "Skins" bit for those. Click the thumbnails below to see larger versions of the three mentioned artworks.

HomeCrafter 2 possibly next Week [Update]
Written at 20:20 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
Dutch Sims fansite SP Zone has heard that a Sims 2 tool similar to HomeCrafter will be released on the official site next week. They don't know much except that the tool allows you to create floors and wallpapers. The site also says that this tool is one of a few that Maxis will release in the upcoming weeks. The news is from an anonymous source, and it's unclear whether it's from within EA or not. It also is not officially confirmed yet. Of course we'll keep you updated about this.

[Update 15 December 22:25] As you can read in the comments of this post, our affiliate Sim's Stash, has had a chance to interview Tim LeTourneau. There are questions about custom content tool, and Tim says some will follow "soon, very soon". To the question if a tool to create floors and walls will be released, a positive "definitely" is answered. There's still no official confirmation that a tool will be released next week though. See the full interview for more.

Sims 2 University Preview
Written at 21:21 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
A new preview of the Sims 2 University has been added to IGN recently. The preview describes the life of student Sims when they first enter the campus and later. A few new facts are mentioned. For example, the living in dorms is described a bit more in-depth. When your Sim is at dorms, redecorating completely or knocking down walls isn't possible. Your Sim can redecorate with some items and wall hangings, but that's all. Also, your Sim will live together with NPC sims. So while you play one, you're not able to control others though you can visit them in their dorms. If you're not in their room, the room will be faded out and you won't see what's going on in there. Something else new is that these NPC students can be sent into the regular neighborhood where you'll be able to control them. That way you can develop relationships further and allow Sims to age.

Your Sim will need to earn enough money and friends, fraternities and sororities will be unlocked. The Greek society might also invite you, or any other Sim they like, to join them, and if you become important enough you'll be able to have influence on what younger Sims have to do. That includes cleaning, doing homework or pulling pranks. There are also secret societies which allow you to do some more criminal things. However, if the police finds out, that won't be good.

UrbzDay: Comic
Written at 00:13 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Just like the past few weeks, this week's Urbzday only consists of a comic. It's the second one by Jim Mahfood, who's done a comic for Skyline Beach before. This time he takes Jayde to Cozmo Street though, to join the Black Eyed Peas. It's the final of 10 comix which have come out the past weeks, and so it's not sure what the official site will be updated with next Urbzday - if at all. But there's no need to worry about that now - for now you can just read the comic. As said, that's all for the Urbz this week.

SimDay: Christmas Spirit is Rising
Written at 00:26 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week's SimDay has a lot of Christmas in it. But first, there's a little bit about the official site. Maxis has added polls again, and the first one is about amounts of objects. It also reveals that the Sims 2 University will ship with 130 new objects for your Sims to use. The other - and last - non-christmas thing is a preview of the first expansion pack by IGN. However, we've already told you about that one earlier this week.

With the holidays nearing us soon, Maxis has posted a few new things for you to get. The first 3 are a set of wallpapers. The three can be downloaded in four different sizes each to match your desktop resolution. They can be found in the wallpapers area in Get Cool Stuff. One other thing Maxis has made to get us in the holiday spirit, is a christmas tree your Sims can buy. If you download the tree and install it in your game, your Sims will be able to celebrate christmas as well. You can of course include Starrats' Santa to get him in the game as well.

New Poll
Written at 00:30 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
A new poll has been sitting on the right for almost 24 hours already, but still we'd like to point it out to you. It's all about the rumoured HomeCrafter tool for the Sims 2. What do you think about that news? Let us know by voting in the poll either on the right, or on the latest poll page.

Last week we asked if Santa will bring you something Sims this year. 243 people voted, of which 42% said they already have everything Sims so they won't need anything else. Second are the 60 people (25%) who are hoping for the Sims 2. 15% Hopes they'll get the Urbz, and about 7% some other Sims game. Then there are 15 (6%) who said they don't celebrate christmas, and finally the remaining 5% who said "probably not." If you want to see the exact results, check out the results page.

TS2U Designer Diary
Written at 15:44 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
As GameSpot did for the Sims 2, they've started a designer diary for the Sims 2 University, the first expansion for the game. Charles London, a designer at Maxis, tells us Maxis is well in the development process of Unviersity. Although there are no new facts, it is another overview of what the pack will be about. Included are two brand new screenshots as well, which you can see below. You can see the logo vaguely if you look in the right-bottom corner of the shots too. If you want to read the designer diary, then click here.

Exchange Upgraded
Written at 15:49 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The official exchange has undergone a minor upgrade. The community has been "hacking" the game a lot since its release, and custom hacks and objects have been released on fansites and forums quite a lot. However, lots and sims using such hacks uploaded to the exchange were packed with such hacks, even if you don't want them. Maxis has now changed the exchange so if any custom hacks not made by Maxis are included, a little warning icon is displayed with the details of the item. On the details page of the package, which lists all the custom content that's included, the CRC and default filename is included in the list. This makes it easier for you to find the hacks and delete them from your Downloads folder. For more about this, see the hack help page that Maxis made for this.

HomeCrafter Plus Officially Announced [Update]
Written at 00:22 by ChEeTaH - 4 comments.
Tim LeTourneau, one of the producers over at Maxis, has confirmed that "The Sims 2 HomeCrafter Plus" will be released tomorrow on the official site. The tool will allow you to customize walls, floors and ground textures. Tim has confirmed this through a community mailing, which you can read in the "Read more" part of this post. He also included some screenshots of the tool, which you can check out before the program is released tomorrow. Of course, if by tomorrow you have any floors, walls or ground textures to submit to us, feel free to do so and they'll be added in our files database! Click the thumbnails of the screenshots below to see them in large, read on for Tim's words, and/or wait patiently until tomorrow.

[Update 21 December, 14:00] While many people are waiting for the tool, Maxis has placed an FAQ online on the official site. Head over to the HomeCrafter Plus FAQ for more information. The questions of the FAQ have been placed in our knowledge base as well. If you have any HomeCrafter Plus specific questions, feel free to post them - or answer others - in the new HomeCrafter Plus Category.

Maxis gets New General Manager
Written at 15:36 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
When Maxis moved from Walnut Creek to Redwood City and Luc Barthelet left ealier this year, Neil Young became the new General Manager of Maxis. Neil is now moving on to EALA, Electronic Arts Playa Vista studio in California, where his responsibilities will include building "improved processes that ensure high quality games are built on workable schedules." This is reported by IGN (thanks to WorldSims for the link).

We've been confirmed that the new General Manager of Maxis will be Nick Earl. Nick joined EA in 2001, as Chief Operating Officer at EA's Redwood Shores studio in Redwood City, California. He became General Manager of that studio in 2002, and now also of Maxis. Before working at EA, Earl worked for Eidos as Vice President of Product Development, and before that he worked at 3DO for six years. For more information about him, see his biography at the Redwood Shores site, under "About", and then "Meet the Execs".

Just 24hrs after Homecrafter was released, we've already got a few items created with it (see previous posts) and now we have a tutorial for it! Now you can see how we make custom wallpaper, custom floors and custom grass (if that's what makes you happy).

Of course you can always send your creations in to us here at TSZ - we'd love to see them.

New Christmas Object
Written at 23:09 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Maxis has posted a new object for Christmas to be used in the Sims 2. With the Kwanzaa Kinara your Sims can also celebrate the seven day Kwanzaa festival celebrating the "African American people, culture and history." For more information about this object, head on to the details page on the official site.

Sims 2 University Interview, Screens and Logo
Written at 23:44 by ChEeTaH - 4 comments.
Maxis has revealed several new screenshots of the Sims 2 University, as well as the logo. The first three screenshots come from GameSpy. You can see them below, but if you want to read the added description head over to the article. Meanwhile Maxis has also sent out a new scoop newsletter. This scoop contains the "latest" info of the Sims 2 University, and two new screenshots are added. But that's not all - the new logo, slightly different from the previous one, is also shown. I've taken the same logo from the box mock up from EBGames though, with thanks to SP Zone for the link there. All of that can be seen below - click the thumbnails to see larger versions.

Furthermore, GameSpot has interviewed Kevin Hogan, the lead producer of the expansion pack. There isn't really any news in it, but if you want to read it anyway check out the interview. Here's a little quote about the objects from it:
"Juice kegs are definitely a part of the pack! We won't be unveiling it just yet, so be on the lookout for it! Also, stay tuned to hear more about the other objects that will be available in the pack. They are great. There are also a host of new furniture pieces and build mode options, as well as reward objects for the new careers."

HomeCrafter Interview
Written at 23:48 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
After the release of the HomeCrafter Plus yesterday, GameSpy has posted a new interview with Darren Futa. Futa was producer of the tool, as well as the Body Shop and probably upcoming tools as well. It's a very short interview but Darren does explain why there's no exchange for walls, floors and ground textures - that would mean a release after christmas, and Maxis is happy with seeing the content on the fansites. If custom content is included in a lot, it'll be posted on the exchange automatically as well. To read the entire interview, click here.

2004 News Overview & New Poll
Written at 01:00 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
With the year 2004 drawing to its end, it's time for a summary of the news of the past year. I've gone through our archives, and listed the most important news items. You can go through all of them month by month at the latest editorial.

Of every month, I've picked a news item that I though was the most important of that month. You can find links to these headlines in our current poll. In this poll, you can choose which headline you think is the most important Sims news item of 2004. Let us know, and the final results will be revealed in two weeks (that's right, this poll will run for 2 weeks instead of the usual week). Until then, they're hidden... Vote on the right or the latest poll page

If you want to check out the results of last week's poll, head to the results page. It was all about the HomeCrafter and its rumour that it would be released this week (and it did).

Urbz Site Changed
Written at 00:56 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
It seems last week's UrbzDay was the last one indeed. The official site has now been changed, and shows links to the city guide that was posted in November. All the old information and content can still be found through the XAM menu, but it's unlikely much new content - if any at all - will be added in the future. To check out all the information head over to urbzsims.ea.com.

SimDay
Written at 01:31 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week's SimDay is a fairly big one, with quite a bit about movies. First of all there's an interview with MaxoidPlumpBob. She (Kerie Kimbrell) is a movie director at Maxis. In the interview she gives some tips about creating your own movies. Read the interview to get the details. Along with this, Maxis has made it possible to rate the videos posted by members on their MySim pages.

There's a lot more about movies and the Sims 2 University inside...

Merry Christmas
Written at 02:03 by ChEeTaH - 1 comment.
The time has come very close now; Christmas is close and so I want to wish everybody on behalf of the entire team of the Sims Zone a merry Christmas. Whether you're getting lots of presents or not, we hope your wishes will come true and you'll have a few great days. As EA has published four Sims 2 holiday screenshots, they are yours to be viewed now - just click the thumbnails below.

Also a quick note to say that I'll be away from Christmas until 10 January (that's a bit more than 2 weeks). During that period it may take longer for e-mails to be answered, if at all. Please be patient and I'll be back at the 10th.

Merry Christmas from ChEeTaH, Andy, Carrie, Matt, Neil, Starrats, Stash, Steve and Sumit!

University Information Page Launched
Written at 08:48 by Stash - 4 comments.
The EA Games Website has launched page for The Sims 2: University Expansion Pack. The page features game description, system requirements, and screen shots. Although no "new" information is there, it is still worth a look. Go check out the page by clicking here.
