Sims 2 Not Working? Try This...
Based on my own personal experience over all of last week when my nice shiny new copy of Sims 2 decided it wasn't going to play anymore, I present my solution to this problem in a new Extra. It may help if you don't see any messages about DirectX 9 adaptors or even if you don't see any messages at all, rather a black screen when starting Sims 2.

Note though that the article assumes, in the latter parts, that you understand what I'm going to be waffling on about so you may wish to supply the Extra to somebody who knows about these things. I'd love to know if the extra ideas help you out - do let me know :)

To replace the DLL properly, without having to do it every time over and over again, for Windows 2000 and XP (with the File protection):

- Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 when you turn on your computer to show the boot menu, and choose safe mode).
- Replace the DLL in the Windows\System32\DLLCache folder
- And then in the Windows\System32 folder
- Reboot normally

It's recommended to make back-ups of the original files somewhere. The DLLCache may be hidden - go to Tools->File Options (menu) to change the setting so Windows shows hidden and system files and folders as well.

My method as I described in the article is, as I said then, a "temporary fix" to get the game working in light of having tried the easier stuff. I never said that it's the best solution but if its gets the game working then that's good.

In my experience, forcing the change of the DLL file in question to stick permantely (ie overriding WFP) stopped the game working, but I have yet to try replacing the copy in DLLCache to see if it makes a permanent fix. If so, I'll amend the article. I went down the disabling WFP for system32 route and that got my game working.

Tom: That's a known problem with some no-cd patches (cracks). You shouldn't use those, but play the game with the CD as it was supposed to (and if you have a pirated copy, you should buy the game).

My game was running fine, but I kept getting lines through anything that moved.... sims and certain moving objects. Although it didn't stop the game from working, it certainly was annoying. I have an ATI Radeon 9200 and I downloaded the catalyst driver thingie and now it works wonderfully. Just so ya'll know!

Well the DLLCache folder thing didn't work either - same symptoms as before despite it being the same file that works when you replace it with my method.

I will admit, I don't quite understand why my game works when I overwrite the file in question myself (and get the game going before WFP notices) yet when the file I manually extract is there all along it doesn't work at all.

But not to worry, I'm going to reinstall next week anyway. That'll sort it :)
