First you have to move your family into a small house. Press sift, ctrl, and C on your keyboard, once the code box has appeared at the top of your screen, type in: motherlode keep doing this until you have enough simoleons. Then move out your family and into their new fab home! :D

Well I'm just getting back into the game after 2 yrs. But what I do is this: if you already have them in a house evict them without bulldozing that house, unless you don't like it. Then go and move them into the new house, they won't lose any simoleons by doing this. As a matter of fact I will create or move a family into an empty lot, build up their simoleons and evict them then either buy a lot with house or a better lot to build on.

Having cash on hand will not help you move into a new house, it will however make you able to buy lots of stuff. Your house has to be worth as much as the house you want to buy before you can buy it.
