When I try and create a basement I lower the terrain enough to put walls in and paint and put flooring in but it just wont let me put stairs in! It wont even tell me what the problem is - I tried both types. What am I doing wrong?

What you do is build the foundations, lower the terrain, cut the middle bit of the foundations out and then use a connecting stair to make the link.

You need to put the connecting stair right next door to the hole you've just chopped out of the foundations, and also the deeper you go, the longer the stair length needed.
