If you just want to play a teen living with her parents, or one elderly person in a retirement home with others or something, will the others in the house be better at taking care of themselves?

Yes, they will be able to fulfill all their basic needs. They will eat when hungry, make it to the bathroom, and get themselves out the door in time for work. You will be able to focus on just one Sim, no problem.

the A.I. is MUCH better than it was in the original sims. you'll still have to point them in the right direction every now and then, mainly with kids and teens doing their homework, but it is vastly improved.
